Pumping Iron 25th Anniversary Special Edition

Arnold Schwarzenegger works the crowds, plots strategies for defeating multiple opponents, shares his parents’ values with the press, and inspires legions of admirers with his resolute optimism about the future. And all of this long before he decided to run for governor of California, in 1977’s hit documentary, Pumping Iron. Larger than life, though not necessarily larger than his rivals for the Mr. Universe and Mr. Olympia bodybuilding titles (especially a young Lou Ferrigno, hot on Arnold’s competitive trail but much less interesting), Schwarzenegger still comes across, at age 28, as a consummate politician, smart, likable, and crafty about exploiting others’ psychological weaknesses. The film still feels redundant (there’s only so much beefcake the human eye will tolerate), but the emotional dramas–the unrewarded hard work, the unanswered hopes–are compelling. Complete with a revealing 2003 interview with Schwarzenegger and a reunion of the film’s bodybuilders and director. –Tom Keogh

5 Stars Arnold: the exemplary Bodybuilder’s body
It’s not until you take a look at contemporary bodybuilders, and what passes for ‘gyms’ these days, that you will really appreciate the big guys from the 1970’s and their culture. Lou Ferrigno looks awesome, but the true star is Arnold. Whether he took steroids or not, growth hormone does not give you proportion, symmetry, height and the natural propensity to build big muscles. So if you want to study a gifted, inspirational athlete, buy this DVD and watch it before going to the gym.
5 Stars Great Buy
Shipping was speedy and item arrived in the condition specified on amazon. DVD works great and no problems at all! A really great buy at a great price.
5 Stars The Best Guy Bods Ever!
I purchased for my husband who was seriously into weightlifting some years ago. I’m not sure if he’s looked at it, I think he said he remembered seeing it when it first came out in the VHS tape format. I plan on looking at it sometime in the future and I decided to purchase it because from time to time, I heard references about it in various media arenas and more recently I was looking at my husband’s muscle mag and there was an article about both guys where reference again was made about them in Pumping Iron so I was curious and the price was right! My favorite muscle guys were Lou (The Hulk) & Arnold (Conan and later the Terminator).
4 Stars The most satisfying feeling you can get in the gym is… The Pump
Long before classics like Predator, Commando, & Total Recall Arnold was simply known as the funny sounding 5 time Mr. Olympia champion/ ultimate meat stick. Pumping Iron is a documentary about the world of competitive weightlifting as Arnold takes on the Incredible Hulk in a protein laden feats of strength like no other. Being bizarre and hilarious all at once Sid watched in amazement at the homo-erotic battle of muscles. There were numerous times you felt as if Arnold’s competition was going to try to make a sexy time with him right on the Gold’s Gym floor. The way his bulky admirers would watch do hammer curls was easily some of the strangest footage to date in Sid’s movie watching history.
All in all Pumping Iron was a hilarious Arnold experience that just couldn’t be taken seriously in any sense. For the true body builder this film has to be something viewed on a weekly basis in hopes of feeling “The Pump,” or as motivation before you hit Gold’s for an afternoon of back and biceps. The only thing missing from this viewing was a chocolate Peanut butter whey protein shake, 3 pounds of turkey breast, and four boiled potatoes. We’ve heard there is talk about releasing a collectors edition version which will come welded in a 25lb Kettlebell with a coupon for 50 free pounds of Perdue hormone free chicken breast. On that note we feel we had to change the rating system for Pumping Iron from stars to steroid injections, giving our feature of the evening an enthusiastic 4 steroid injections out of 5.
5 Stars Back in the day….
I remember this movie coming out back in the mid 70’s. My dad was into pumping iron back then, and I remember him letting me do a little. I was 10 turning 11 during the time this movie was filmed. I laugh when I look at the weight machines/equipment that was in the gyms back then. They seem to primitive and clunky compared to the weights and machines that we use today….I saw Pumping Iron on tv a little while back, and loved it. Seeing Arnold, Mark Katz, Franco Columbo and the other guys in that group working out in their prime was very motivational in my own workouts today. I especially loved seeing big Lou Ferrigno work out, and being coached and pushed by his dad. It was a great time in body building, THE GOLDEN ERA so to speak. Brought back alot of memories of how it used to be. This is defenitly worth having in your collection. Get it, and be motivated….Oh yeah, and wasnt Arnold the COCKY one back then, Ha….
