The book features beginning, intermediate and advanced levels so you can work at a comfortable level. Find many fun and effective ways to use your exercise ball with this great book from Elizabeth Gillies.

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars Pretty good
This book has colored pictures that are large and easy to follow. The instructions are clear and easy to understand. The exercises are labeled as beginner, all levels, advanced, etc. There are variations to many exercises, which is great. Overall I am happy with my purchase.

3 Stars Wish I actually used this
What I really want is a poster that I can look at while I’m on the ball. It’s difficult to get the hang of the moves when you’re holding the book. That said, she has some great ideas of how to use the ball. Some are a little gratuitous, though, and you don’t need the ball for them.

5 Stars Play, not work!
Liz Gillies goes into a bit of background on the theoretical stuff. Although most of the exercises are not new, what stands out is the sense of fun she has when working out with the exercise ball, making it less work & more play. This makes me want to do more of them, & more often. This, coupled with exercises’ effectiveness, has already made a difference in my posture & the way I carry myself, after only 3 weeks of 3x a week exercise. Thanks Liz. About that cat stance on the ball… I did it! Only for less than a second though, but in time…

2 Stars Not Exactly What I had Expected
I own a few other “101 way to” books and this one disappointed. I expected new exercises to help me with my job as an aerobics instructor, but it failed to do so. Instead a stretch with the ball was labeled as an exercise.

4 Stars on the ball pilates
Great book for anyone who has become tired of the same old thing with Pilates. Used book in great condition

Dr. Franco Columbo, a well-known expert on nutrition and kinesiology (and two-time Mr. Olympia) presents the most successful strategies and diet plans for achieving a superior physique. How the body utilizes the basic nutrients and how to use that to your advantage is explained in detail.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Great
This book is amazing, not only suggests what to eat, but also tells one how much to eat, and the reasons why he recommends it, taking into account that everybody is different all at the same time.

Again great source of information.

5 Stars Informational
Great book on nutrition, and inforative on his experiences and journey with body building. Enjoy the book, not just from the informational aspect but also learning of his journey and the things he had experienced!

5 Stars Great simple and informative book
I have read a lot of book on nutrition for athlets.

This one has exceeded my expectation.

Very symple to understand and ” back to the basic” type of approach.

1 Star Worst nutrition book I have ever read.
This book is the worst book on nutrition that I have ever read. Imagine recommending 3 large meals accompanied by beer or wine as an appropriate nutritional regieme for a modern athlete. The only value this book has as is an historical document which demonstrates how ignorant we were about nutrition not all that long ago. If you follow the advice in this book you had better be on steroids if you think you are going to get big. Absolute rubbish.

5 Stars Good Basic Information.
This book thought me a lot about supplements and the way they work in your body.

When you think of abs you most likely think of magazine models with abs so tight you could grate cheese on them! Your pessimistic side may also think of bland diets and endless hours in the gym. Therefore, you assume abs are reserved only for models, bodybuilders or Hollywood celebrities. Not true! This book is going to take your average body and turn it into something you never thought possible. Finally separating the facts from the fiction, the Abs for Life System is your complete body makeover manual to lose that unwanted fat and uncover those abs you never knew you had. The book features the Lean for Life Nutrition System which combines a unique carb rotation method, proven to get lean and stay lean. The book also incorporates The Lean Muscle Plan, which is a Weight Training System to build, sculpt and tone your entire physique. No stone is left unturned with the Abs for Life System, it is without doubt the most comprehensive Body Makeover System to date!

5 Stars Great buy for the money…
I thought the book was very straight and to the point in that you can do crunches till you can’t do anymore, but just adominal work won’t get you that dream set of abs you desire. He tells you that in this book and how the key to a chisled stomach is mainly your diet.

Great read for anyone starting out and not fully understanding why you can’t see that flat stomach as of yet.

5 Stars A Great Investment!
I have just started following the Abs for Life System for about 3 weeks now and I’ve lost 9 pounds and an inch off my waist so far. I have trained on and off for about ten years now and this is no word of a lie, I’ve actually learned more from reading this book than I have in those ten years of reading all the fitness mags. I like the fact that although the book emphasizes on getting abs, it also provides a plan for building muscle all over your body. Myself and a few buddies at my gym have all been following the muscle building plan contained in the book.

Nutrition is covered extensively. As the author points out, forget sculpting great abs and a great body if you cannot nail your diet. I have learned so much about food I could write my own book on the topic! The meal suggestions were great and especially liked the guilt free desserts that were listed.

I like the approach of this system as it is maintainable not just short term, but I can see myself sticking to this for years to come. I will update this review in 12 weeks, but wanted to write something now as I am soo pleased with the results.

Please read this book, for under $16, it really is a sound investment. Bravo!

5 Stars This is THE solution to your six pack!
Right On! This book really reveals the secret of getting in rock-hard shape. I love the sections about carb rotation, and the author is not afraid to mention supplements that will help you get to your goal… whereas so many other books never do that. The work-out routines might be very similar to others you have seen, but the information about nutrition is very detailed… all you need to do is follow the guidelines and flab will be flying off. Another great section is about how models/bodybuilders prepare for competition. I always wondered about how they got those deep ridges between their abdominals. It’s all in this book. Finally someone that covers it all.

5 Stars If you want abs buy this book
I used to often buy all the workout magazines you see in the stores. Abs in 4 weeks! Eat the junk and still get a six pack! All these cover stories get you to buy the magazine, but in reality these are unrealistic goals. Sure if you run 15 miles a days and were to eat just grapes and prune juice you would lose weight, but hardly anyone has the time to do these plans or would want to eat such boring food for any protracted period of time. I have brought many workout books over the years and they tend to concentrate on the exercises and when it comes to diet its eat more protein, eat less junk, thanks for the cash, see you later.

This book is different. Unlike the recycled articles in the magazines written by pot-bellied journalists, this book is written by Neil Frost a man not scared to show a picture of himself and the results he has achieved following his own program. Achieving a six pack is within your grasp if you have the discipline to stick to the principles laid down in this book.

The program takes about 12 weeks and if you check out his website then you can see before and after pictures together with testimonials of people that have succeeded with this lifestyle program. I say lifestyle, as exercise will account for very little of your time. You don’t need to spend hours in the gym. The biggest part of the program is learning what you should be eating and when and this is fully covered in the book together with recipe ideas.

The exercise section is well thought out and easy to follow, the diet section is in depth but straightforward.

If you have the willpower to stick to this program, you will see impressive results. I know i have.

There is also a DVD for this program which is also worth a look.

2 Stars Why did other people give this 5 stars?
This book stinks. And is inaccurate. I disagree with about 20 things he said in this book. I suppose its acceptable for beginners and first timers, it will point you in the right direction, but if you are even the slightest bit experienced or have read other fitness books you will realize this book stinks.

I recommend the Body Sculpting Bible for Men, its not a ab-specific book, but no book really is including Abs for Life. The bible’s section on diet and nutrition is much better than Abs for Life.

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars An Excellent Primer to Strength Training
This book goes in depth in the science, art and benefits of strength training. While this book might be too simplistic for an advanced bodybuilder/weight trainer, it’s an excellent guide for people (male, female, seniors and even older children) who are beginners in the world of strength training, and a good reference source. “Strength Training” does not fall into the trap of other weight training books that focus on specific aspects of strength training. It’s written to give the reader a complete overview on the benefits of strength training as well as thorough explanation on scientific background, proper techniques, guidelines, routines and programs for people of (almost) all fitness levels, and to guide the reader to the best routine that’ll work for them.

The book is separated into four parts:

“Part I: The Origin of Strength” talks about the science, physiology and growth/behavior of skeletal muscle. While I found this part a little long-winded (it’s 95 pages long!), and its content can rival virtually any college-level anatomy and physiology textbook on the subject, it’s still a must read for a beginner to understand how a muscle works, why it grows, and how proper technique and nutrition is essental in muscle growth and development.

“Part II: Resistance Training Guidelines” discusses assessing one’s strength and fitness level; an explanation on the types of exercises (Isometric, Isotonic, Plyometric, etc.); the necessity for a proper workout schedule and rest; the organization of one’s workout for the individual; the goal(s) an individual may have; and on safety, injury and the body’s reaction to an initial workout. Again, some of this can get a little technical and long-winded, but not so that the average high school-level reader can’t understand what’s being said.

“Part III: Exercise Techniques” goes into what everyone is probably looking for: how to do specific exercises. None of the exercises are too exotic; they cover all parts of the body; it’s well-rounded, clear and concise. However, I found the chapter somewhat lacking on common mistakes people make when doing an exercise (there are blurbs, such as not to round your back on a deadlift). I think that’s very important for the novice strength trainer, and the authors should have given more detailed descriptions or examples on common mistakes beginnners make. That said, it’s a great section nevertheless.

“Part IV: Sample Programs” does what it says: give sample programs for the beginner, intermediate and advanced trainer. While the section gives plenty of examples, it encourages the reader to find a routine that works for them based on the information given. The book is good at giving that guidance.

Again the book is not meant for the most advanced weighttrainer. And it’s not the type of book to simply open up to copy a sample routine or how to do a bent-over row. It’s meant to be a guide for someone who’s new to strength training. So the book should be read cover to cover before the reader creates a program for themselves. While the book can get technical in some areas, it’s by no means a hard read. Anyone should have no trouble getting through the book in a day. Once they do, I’m confident they can fashion a workout routine that’s safe, convenient (yet challenging), adaptable, and even fun.

5 Stars Excellent Choice!
This book is an excellent choice for those wishing to learn about resistance training, exercise technique, adaptations to training, and key fundamental concepts for designing periodized training programs. This book is great for the beginner as well as the practitioner. Great buy, especially for the price!

5 Stars Really helpful!
I had to by this book for a class, and it is incredibly helpful! Anyone looking to become a personal trainer should at least check it out, if not by it.

5 Stars great for beginners
great book for people looking to get started with training who don’t have to much background knowledge. has all the info you need to know to at least put together a decent program. lots of pictures and exercises and for the price it’s a great deal.

2 Stars Stupid errors, dangerous practices mar an otherwise great concept.
Great attempt. A recently published book that includes very recent research into strength training, and is comprehensive in its scope… just the kind of books I’ve come to expect from the publisher Human Kinetics… except it isn’t….

on page 41 the muscle fiber growth picture shows a before and after strength training comparison… where the fibers are seen to grow, however its obvious that the ‘after’ picture is a blown up pic of the bottom left corner of the ‘before’ picture… lame. Makes me question the credibility of the sources and research…

On page 86, under daily carbohydrate requirements, the glycemic index of different foods is listed, with a chart below that has several examples. Regardless of the obvious listing of fruits as low on the index, and breads as high, the text says “Carbohydrate sources with a high glycemic index, such as fruits and processed sugar, are metabolized quickly. Carbohydrate sources with a low glycemic index, such as starches and cellulose, are metabolized more slowly.”

The above is wrong.. very wrong. Quite nearly the opposite of the truth. Fruits contain fructose.. THE SLOWEST metabolized carbohydrate that must be processed by the liver… starches are.. with few exceptions (gluten bound carbs in pasta, and mostly amylose grains like basmati rice) THE FASTEST digested and metabolized carbohydrates, … even faster than pure cane sugar, and cellulose is an undigestable fiber, providing no energy.

The Margaria-Kalamen test is recommended to test lower body power. It consists of sprinting towards some stairs, and running up them as fast as you can, hitting only every third step, for three steps.

Running on stairs… potentially dangerous and not reflective of any daily activities… not a good choice for anyone, especially elderly, sedentary, uncoordinated individuals… but no mention of risks or safety.

This book isn’t comprehensive enough to really get a person going in a fitness program… so its not for beginners… while it doesn’t have the depth of focus to cover more focused topics.. except for a relatively useless in depth explanation of how muscles work on the microscopic level. Kinda interesting, but mostly impractical. That sums up the rest of the books content, however find the errors just the worst kind of false expertise… and it comes with the NSCAs name on the cover… they certify fitness trainers. Unforgivable.

Look elsewhere if you are a beginner, lest you wish to hurt yourself and sabotage your progress with bad info. Look elsewhere if you are knowledgeable on the subject, as this book is inadequate and has a lack of focus that makes it a waste of time.

5 Stars Over all workout
I think, the workouts listed here would help me in every area of life, not just golf. Its a great set of exercises.

Now, if I could only find the motivation required to stick to them

1 Star Useless for Golfers
This book has about five pages of information that is even vaguely golf-specific (pp. 9-14); the rest are how to perform weight lifting and specific exercises, with some generic diet advice. The problem is that there is almost no link between the two parts of the book, as in “This exercise will help with your grip” or “These exercises strengthen your forearms, which is important because…” While I haven’t read or looked at all of them, there are 30 books by this author (listed on the back page of this one) claiming to be weight training for different sports. It looks as though the author wrote one book for weight lifting and grafted on a few pages in front and changed the title to make it seem sport-specific. In fact, there are more pages of advertising in the back of the book (six) for the author’s website than there are golf-specific pages. It would be interesting to see if the same typos are in all of the books. If you’re a lifter who wants to take up golf, this book may be helpful, but if you’re a golfer or golfer-wannabe, this book is total waste of money.

5 Stars Just what I wanted
I was looking for a book that actually had workout routines to specifically target areas that would increase my golf game and this one had it. It also has pre-season and off-season workouts which are a plus. It is a very detailed book. Great book!

5 Stars Great book to keep your workout goal oriented and interesting
This book is great! I have always had a problem falling into a workout rut, and this book has designed a fun golf workout that changes every two weeks. I would recommend this book or any book in this series to someone who is training for a specific sport. The book is simple to read and you can download blank workout sheets from their website so you can track your progress. The book also has pictures explaining each exercise that is well organized by muscle group. Golf season has not started yet but I am looking forward to getting out there and crushing some great shots.

3 Stars Great Training Book, But Not Golf Specific
I’ve been involved in weight training at a high level for over 30 years. I took up golf later in life (late 30s) and was looking for a book that would provide exercises and routines that would help me move from pure strength-building to a program tailored for the golfer — focusing more on flexibility, core strength and other exercises that would improve a golfer’s game. This book might mention “golf” a handful of times, but is otherwise far from sport specific. That said, it’s an excellent book for anyone who wants to learn about the fundamentals of weight training — good illustrations of many of the exercises you’ll see in every gym (free weights only) and a good, comprehensive collection of pre-set programs that are geared for different skill/experience levels. I’ve downgraded it 2 stars because the mention of “golf” in the title is completely misleading — if you religiously followed the “strength building” routines from this book, you almost certainly wouldn’t improve your golf game, which relies far more on touch than brute strength.
