High powered Plyometrics

User Ratings and Reviews

3 Stars It served its purpose for me
My complaints about this book would be the technical/sports science explanations of how plyometric training works and benefits an athlete left me feeling like I have attention deficit disorder when trying to read and understand them. Many of the exercises featured even if done with perfect form look like injuries waiting to happen and I won’t ever bother even trying them. Also there is nothing on plyometric pushups and for that matter there are no upper body exercises except those involving the core and those for the most part all require a medicine ball. The good points are they do a good job of explaining the exercises and how to do them properly both with pictures and text. But the bottom line here is I found about 10 new exercises that I will be adding to my repetoire for explosive conditioning, which was what I was looking for when I borrowed this from the library.

5 Stars Better than the Donald Chu book
I was disappointed with the Donald Chu book Jumping into Plyometrics. High Powered Plyometrics by Radcliffe and Farentinos is the real deal as far as I’m concerned. More complete. More detailed.

4 Stars Great Start to Plyometrics
High-Powered Plyometrics is an excellent book for those striving to achieve maximum power from their fitness program of choice. This book gives plenty of information about the human physiology, necessary to understand how the body reacts to physical conditioning. It then smoothly incorporates a detailed outline of the how’s and why’s that make plyometrics work. The authors of the book share their accumulation of research with the reader to grant him the ability of self-evaluation. This book is amazing, it even gives you outlines for building your own jump boxes from scratch, should you be inclined to do so.

You can learn a lot from this book, since there is a wealth of research thrown into this book. Though, I’d also recommend getting Jumping into Plyometrics, by Dr. Donald Chu, in addition to this book. Chu’s book, in my opinion, is no better or worse than High-Powered Plyometrics. Both books have their advantages over the other. The main advantages: High-Powered Plyometrics has a lot more routines already outlined for specific sports; Jumping into Plyometrics has outlined routines involving complex training (basically, Plyometrics + Weight Lifting).

Good luck in your quest for power.

3 Stars Beware Beginners
I purchased this book because I am familiar with plyometrics, having done them years ago in high school athletics. But, I am an adult now, and wanted to reacquaint myself with some plyometric exercises to give me an edge in my running.

I found this book was a bit too inaccessible for me, and ended up returning it. It’s very technical and scientific, even to me– and, I consider myself pretty knowlegeable in terms of exercise, running and fitness.

If you already use plyometrics and are looking for some new ideas, this is probably for you. It relies on several props that may not be avaialble for someone who is a fitness enthusiast, but is not a full time athlete. If you are just taking up an interest in plyometrics, I would not buy this book as my first. (For the novice, I would recommend Chu’s “Jumping Into Plyometrics,” instead.) The book boasts “77 Advanced Exercises” on the cover, and the key word here is indeed, “advanced.”

In short, this book is for professional athletes and coaches, not for someone just getting his/her feet wet in this very beneficial form of training.

4 Stars A great introductory plyometric book
This book is worth the price ($14) alone just for the plyometric routines in the back of the book. The description and science behind plyometrics are excellent and easy to read. My only complaint about the book is that some of the exercises are hard to grasp from the given instructions.

I knew of several lower body plyometric moves, but the amount of upper body ones in the book are impressive. You will need a medicine ball for most of the upper body ones, as well as plyo boxes for some of the lower body ones, but in the book they show you how to make them. This is a definite plus. I also like the suggested readings in the back, which will help if I ever need to go more indepth into a certain aspect of plyometrics.

Overall, this book is worth the money, and will help you in any sport, to become more explosive. Just make sure to study the instructions on the moves carefully, to make sure you are doing them right.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Lots of workouts to choose from
Very informative & provides detailed explanations & pictures as well as beginner & more advanced versions of the same move.

4 Stars Surprised !
I am pretty fit and when I first rec this it looked too basic. I tried one or two exercises and found that this can be very intense! Great techniques on stretching, and form for best results. As I explore each exercise I am learning something new thats helpful!

Worth a look!

4 Stars Ultimate Core Ball Workout
This is a great basic book for beginners and people who need to know the details of core training. I was a little disappointed because it says that it is for all levels, but it doesn’t offer much of a challenge for advanced ball users.

5 Stars Good book!
Very happy with this book. It’s well laid out with plenty of pictures to help explain the various exercises. For most of the exercises the author has a beginners, intermediate and advanced option.

4 Stars Great for beginners!
The book has a nice set of beginner, intermediate, and advance workouts, but if you use it regularly it won’t last more than six months. Nevertheless, I think it is a good start.

5 Stars Excellent Book on Exercise and Nutrition
This book is different from all the many other books on fitness. This book is written by a very talented celebrity who indeed achieved a well recognized fitness level and knows how to teach others how to achieve the same. The ability to communicate easily with others was clear from the very simple and easy language his book was written in and from the very useful tips he gave.

Being into the sports of body building, I could confirm that Mario Lopez is giving the useful exercises and tips any person would need to know when exercising at the gym. However he explored many other areas that I didn’t realize before they had so much effect on body building, such as playing regularly other sports like Boxing or dancing too in addition to your body building workout. The exercises handed in this book are thoroughly explained with pictures too detailing the steps of every exercise. The meal plans that were given were very detailed, in addition to the many useful nutrition tips that were given by Mario.

However, I felt that people who have good experience in body building won’t benefit much from the exercises given in this book as much as how the beginners would. But these experienced body builders would certainly benefit from the many health and nutrition tips given, because they are not widely-known facts.

This book is useful for everyone interested in Fitness, especially those that do not have much body building experience and need to have an easy guide for their fitness program.

5 Stars Awesome book!!!
Great book for beginner’s and/or intermediate..want to write my own fitness guide-this is a great template to start with…celebrity fitness at it’s finest!!! Blessed Mario!!

5 Stars Mario Lopez
Very good book, gives you lots of examples of various exercises and step by step instructions on how to perform them.

4 Stars It definitely works If you stick with it
Written with a very motivational languagge together with a lot of nice and motivational photos but better for beginners it think. If you are a professional or at least a mid pro so there are still some tricks to learn from this book but not sure if it completely fits with your expectations or not.

5 Stars Amazing Book
Excellent book with some challenging aspects, a realistic point of view when it comes to working out.

The Battle for Olympia 2002 Vol VII

October 31st, 2009 by Bodybuilder

The Battle for Olympia 2002 Vol VII

The 2002 Battle for the Olympia is a very good glimpse into the pre-contest training of several top Mr. Olympia contenders. We get to see not only their training routines, but also learn about some of their nutritional secrets and see their lives at home in some cases. Many of the athletes also pose and their strengths are weaknesses can be assessed as the days leading towards the Olympia contest progress. Ronnie Coleman at 275 pounds and Gunter Schlierkamp at 303 pounds are seen in the video. The condition of most of the athletes featured is very close to the contest condition because of the time of most of the shoots. A great video, and certainly worth buying if you are a fan of bodybuilding.
